History: Richards Bay was named after the British naval commander Rear Admiral Sir Frederick William Richards, who landed troops on this part of the Zululand coast in 1879. It was basically little less than a small fishing village until the port was opened in 1976. Aluminium mining is also an important industry in the Richards Bay vicinity.
Entertainment: With lovely scenery and unspoilt beaches the town is becoming popular with holidaymakers. It is the one of the closest seaside towns to Gauteng and the warm year-round climate means that outdoors enthusiasts are well catered for. Visitors can watch dolphins and whales from the beach, and with a 4x4, crocodile and hippo can be viewed further up the shore.
