This home, this ?get-away?, was once filled to the brim with books written in Afrikaans, Dutch, English and German. Reference books, novels, poetry. With all the books stacked against walls, there was little space to manoeuvre, even to get into the loo. Aside from ?the land?, Rykie loved words and loved writing. Having paid R900 for the erf, she built this original house in 1967 for R10,000. It was built as a beach house, a place to retreat to. And not just for herself. Many friends used it as a place of seclusion to write. Some brought their lovers and used it as a hideaway.
